    由于地处美洲大陆的最南端，与南极洲隔海相望，智利人常称自己的国家为“天涯之国”。然而，这个地球上距离中国最远的国家却与中国有着悠久的友好交往史。1970年，智利与中华人民共和国建立了外交关系，成为第一个与新中国建交的南美洲国家。中智建交以来，两国关系发展顺利。1999年，智利与中国签署了“关于中国加入世界贸易组织的双边协议”，是第一个与中国结束双边市场准入谈判的拉美国家。智利学者们对中国现状的一直高度关注，克劳迪娅·拉瓦尔卡所著的《智利与中国（全球化时代下的文化商贸和信用）（英文版）》描述了在智利汉学家的眼中，当今全球化时代背景下对中国的文化、商业的看法。
