作者简介

    亨利·沃尔特·贝茨(Henry Walter·Bates,1825—1892),英国博物学家和探险家。出生于莱斯特一个纺织业主家庭。自幼热爱收集,喜欢研究昆虫。没有受过高等教育,小学毕业后一边当学徒一边自学。1848年,他和动物学家阿尔弗雷德·罗素·华莱士一起前往南美洲的亚马逊河流域进行科学考察,为大英博物馆收集哺乳动物、鸟类、昆虫和植物标本,一去就是十年。期间,他不但收集了大量生物标本,还发现一些昆虫为保护自身,演化出具有防御功能的拟态性状,对以达尔文为代表的演化论学说有一定的推动作用。为纪念他的发现,动物的这一性状被称为“贝茨拟态”。
